Reflections from a year abroad...

Below is an excerpt from a much longer commentary I have been working on here in Asia... it is much different from the typical therapeutic thrashing I tend to type, but it is one of the first things I have written in some time that has provided me some measure of happiness or serenity...

In this instance, I ignore the intoxicating allure of indulging my mind's want of eviscerating invisible enemies with piquant prose...

I like to think it is relevant, thoughtful, and perhaps even helpful, but if it fails to meet such criteria, I'm still happy with the result...

The more I age, the more I realize, I prefer genuine happiness and depth of emotion, to the cyclical, cynical and addictive, of allowing my mind to fight battles with invaders of whom nary exist....

***

Forgive yourself, let it go, move on...

Continually learn and improve... not only from your failures and mistakes (as is often given as reason for reflection) but also by realizing the impact of others, luck, the environment, and any number of other factors or variables that may have contributed to your achievements... no man is an island...

Reflect rather than react... think... listen... be mindful of the impact of your actions and inactions...

Don't be afraid to speak, but realize your words can convey much more pain or joy to your audience than nearly anything you could do through physical contact.... you cannot unsay a word anymore than you can unring a bell...

And lastly, stay positive and enjoy the journey... accept and believe, that a good life, is not unlike a good book... it isn't chapter after chapter of splendor and bliss, but rather the culmination of the sundry peaks and valleys... it is filled with the tears of crestfallen heroes, affirmations of principled men, and the ever intertwined connectedness of its various characters...

As you move forward, take the time to survey your surroundings... both the beautiful and the grotesque... knowing that every experience or emotion is ultimately enhanced by understanding the reality of its antonym...

Don't pity or rush away when faced with the uncertainties or negatives that are inherent in life... embrace these experiences, know the truth of your feelings, allow yourself to examine your emotions, and reflect on what you have learned...

Do so knowing, that the challenges and obstacles you overcome, will prominently define the depth and essence of each success you achieve and every positive emotion you receive... you needn't rush from pain, or distract yourself with diversion...

Life isn't an exercise in absolutes that requires mere robotic responses to simple stimuli while extending a bare minimum of effort... examine, understand, enjoy, and enrich....

Make the most of the opportunities your "Book of Life" presents... you and your more nuanced and aware mind will enjoy the subtleties more, minimize the impact of doubt, and dissipate the  lingering uncertainties which we often accord too great a share of our few moments here...

These my friends, are the words I wish I could share with each of you, the sentiments I find that afford me a bit of light within my dark, and the principles to which I hope to adhere as I continue to grow and attempt to provide myself and those I am fortunate enough to know to ever live the good life...

In closing, be kind, forgive others (and yourself), stay true to your beliefs and principles, and realize that like everything that was, is, and ever will be... this too shall pass...
